A prominent mining engineer, he promoted numerous business initiatives in the province, among which the Pozo Ancho Lead Factory stood out. Located on the outskirts of the city, next to the Arroyo de las Piedras stream, it employed numerous English workers of the Protestant faith.

The need for a burial ground for his workers led him to create a small cemetery next to the industrial facilities, the use of which soon spread to the rest of this religious community, becoming known as the Protestant or English Cemetery. This cemetery remained in use until well into the 20th century, when it was abandoned due to lack of space, which led to it being continuously plundered and looted, even becoming a shelter for families with limited financial resources.

In 1959, a relative of the English painter Francis William Tophan, who had been buried in this place, travelled to Córdoba to locate his grave, finding the cemetery in a deplorable state. This led him to report the situation to the British Embassy, which urged the Córdoba City Council to take action to restore it.

It was then that Mayor Antonio Cruz Conde ordered the transfer of the graves that still remained in the Pozo Ancho Factory Cemetery to the San Rafael Cemetery, creating a new space there known as the Evangelical Department. Today, some of the old graves transferred from their original location can still be seen, alongside more recent ones. The memory of industrialist Duncan Shaw has been perpetuated by naming one of the roundabouts at the entrance to the Chinales Industrial Estate after him.

Duncan Shaw During the second half of the 19th century, a small Protestant community emerged in Córdoba, led by the […]

["post-589","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
